Boeing Surplus

According to Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC), it is more than likely that by month-end, US aircraft manufacturing company Boeing will have finalised its decision to set up a maintenance hub in Nagpur city.

Talking to reporters, MADC Managing Director, R.C. Sinha said: “The Chairman of the US based Boeing is in India and the company team has visited only Nagpur to explore the possibilities of setting up a full fledged maintenance repair hub at the multi Modal International Passenger and Cargo Hub (MIHAN), in city.”

Though, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka are also extended an invitation and are keen to become a manufacturing hub for Boeing, only Nagpur has been visited by Boeing’s three member team, their country manager for India, Dinesh Keskar and two others for a recce. Logistically, Nagpur is the ideal location for the Boeing project, and the fact was ratified by the team that visited the city.

Another feather in India’s cap, the successful off-shoring / outsourcing of IT projects is leading to off-shoring projects to India from every conceivable field. From low-rung jobs such as data entry and software development in the 1980s to larger software projects in the 1990s, including the taking over of whole IT systems and back-office functions, such as accounting for U.S. and European corporations, Indian outsourcing service providers, now, draw a bead on more sophisticated services i.e. engineering, research and development, designing auto parts, aircraft wings and chips for wireless services. First, came the auto majors setting up R&D and manufacturing plants in India, only to be followed by aircraft giants, impressed with India’s performance, and convinced India has what it takes to build planes that fly the sky.

They could have gone to China as they did in the past, but time and experience has proven, while China may be cheap, the end product does not always justify cutting costs. Whereas, India is not only cost effective, but it also delivers as promised, with a sophisticated and established network in place. The Chinese honeymoon is over and India is proving itself to be a more stable and reliable partner, talented, skilled and with the expertise and maturity to maintain a healthy relationship!

Predictions about China replacing USA as the next big thing is falling by the way side, as the same pundits reverse tracks, and hedging their bets, aver that though China is ahead, there is a distinct possibility India may take the lead.

As in Aesop’s fable of the hare and the tortoise, I guess slow and steady wins the race! As for me, I always prophesised India would dominate the globe, and I continue to place my money where my mouth is! On India!
